Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for hosting over two-thirds of the world’s great one-horned rhinoceros. The park is also home to the majestic Royal Bengal tiger and it in fact has one of the highest concentration of tigers in the world!

With an area of 430 square kilometers, the park features a wide range of ecosystems such as dense woody forests, wetlands, sweeping grasslands etc. which serve as thriving habitats for diverse species of birds and animals. Thousands of migratory birds visit the park’s water bodies every year and with over 400 species of resident birds, Kaziranga National Park is arguably one of the best places in India for bird-watching.

Apart from the one-horned rhinoceros and Royal Bengal tiger, Kaziranga is also home to the world’s largest populations of Asiatic water buffalo, Asian elephant and Eastern swamp deer, also known as Barasingha. These five mammals are collectively known as the the ‘Big Five’ of Kaziranga.

Other notable mammals include leopard, sambar, hog deer, barking deer, wild boar, sloth bear amongst many others. Nine out of 14 primates found in India occur in the park such as the Assamese macaque, capped and golden langur, as well as the only ape found in India, the hoolock gibbon.

Two of the largest snakes in the world, the reticulated python and rock python, as well as the longest venomous snake in the world, the king cobra, inhabit the park.

Kaziranga’s rivers are also home to the endangered Ganges river dolphin.
