Rang Ghar is an iconic two-storeyed building which once served as the royal sports pavilion from where Ahom kings and nobles watched games such as buffalo fights, wrestling etc. which took place in the adjoining field known as Rupohi Pothar. It is said to be the oldest surviving amphitheater in Asia.
Also known as The Garhgaon Palace, Kareng Ghar is where the Ahom royals lived. It was mainly built out of wood and stone in 1698 by King Rudra Singha. The royals lived on the upper floor which also had a prayer room, while the ground floor served as stables, storerooms and servants’ quarters. Kareng Ghar was rebuilt in 1752 by Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha, fourth son of King Rudra Singha.
Shiva dol in the heart of Sivasagar consists of three Hindu temples of Shivadol (temple of Lord Shiva) , Vishnudol (temple of Lord Vishnu) and Devidol (temple of Goddess Durga) and a museum. These temples are located on the banks of the Borpukhuri tank, built by queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha, Bar Raja Ambika. The height of the Shivadol is 104 feet and is crowned with an 8-foot hight golden-dome.
Talatal Ghar was initially built as an army base. The original structure consisted of a seven-storied building with three floors below ground level. Two secret tunnels, leading to Dikhow river and Garhgaon Palace, served as escape routes in case of an enemy attack. Visitors are allowed to explore the floors above ground while the underground floors have been sealed off due to safety reasons.
Charaideo was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom established by King Sukaphaa, the founder of Ahom dynasty. Even though the capital of the Ahom kingdom changed several times, Charaideo remained a symbolic center. It contains sacred burial grounds where Ahom kings and queens were buried after elaborate burial rituals. Often referred to as the ‘Pyramids of Assam’, Charaideo Maidam attracts a lot of visitors every year.
Joysagar lake is the largest man-made lake in Sivasagar district. Ahom King Rudra Singha built the lake in memory of his mother, Joymoti. The northern bank of the lake has many temples which attract devotees and visitors’ year round. The most renowned temple, Joydol, is devoted to Lord Vishnu.
